At West Island School, our sports programme is built upon four foundational pillars: Wholehearted, Excellence, Spirit, and Together - collectively known as our WEST Standards. These standards represent the shared ethos that defines how we train, compete, and grow as a unified community.
These are visibile expectations described in the examples below; detailing the exact actions and positive language we expect to see every single day. By making these benchmarks transparent, we invite our student-athletes to take full ownership of their commitment, collaborate with their peers, and strive for excellence in everything they do.
We don't do anything in half measures. We prioritise our team, attend every session and game, and give our full focus to improving. We take pride in our punctuality, our proactive communication, and in wearing the navy and white kit properly.
We choose to invest effort and manage personal commitments because the team and the school community matter.
We see Wholehearted through...
What We See (Actions)
Perfect Attendance: Presence at 100% of training sessions and matches.
Punctual & Prepared: Ready to train on the pitch, court, or pool 5 minutes before the official start time. In full kit, ready to warm up as soon as possible after arriving at the match venue.
Active Attention: Full attention and active listening, eyes locked on the coach/captain during teamtalks with balls held still (no side-chats or bouncing basketballs/netballs). Full focus during drills, listening to feedback.
100% Effort: Max physical intensity in every drill (e.g., sprinting hard through the lines in football/rugby fitness, or chasing down every shuttlecock in badminton).
What We Hear (Language)
Proactive Schedule Ownership: "I moved my tutoring session this week so I could make training/the game."
Early Communication (At least 48 hours in advance for emergencies or major academic clashes): "I have an exam conflict next Thursday; I wanted to let you know now so you can plan the lineup."
Growth Focus: "Can we run that play again? I want to make sure I get my timing right."
Excellence isn’t a result; it’s a habit. We take personal responsibility for our fitness, sweat the small details, embrace the challenge of tough competition, and use defeat as a blueprint to improve.
Excellence is found in repeatable details, self-directed habits, and a relentless drive to grow.
We see Excellence through...
What We See (Actions)
Self-Directed Conditioning: Managing personal fitness and "pre-hab" independently (e.g., foam-rolling or dynamic stretching before a rugby session without being told).
Sweating the Details: Adjusting technique and performance based on feedback (e.g., correcting the angle of a pass, setting a higher quality screen, or a netball landing foot on the very next repetition).
Seeking the Challenge: Voluntarily matching up against the strongest players in training or asking to play the top-seeded badminton player.
Reflective Defeat: In loss, maintaining high-posture body language, shaking hands with the opponent, and immediately sitting with the coach to look at the game tape or tactics board.
What We Hear (Language)
Accepting Feedback: "Got it. I was too far away from my player. Let's run that play again so I can lock in."
Targeting Weakness: "My backhand clearance was short today; I need to spend the first 10 minutes of next session drilling that."
Hungry for Growth: "That was a tough match, but they showed us exactly what we need to work on next week."
We bring energy that is contagious. We play with competitive fire, uphold the highest sporting values, and selflessly lift our teammates in good times and bad. We play the game "the right way" and maintain a relentless "next play" focus.
We believe in something bigger than oneself and we choose to elevate those around us.
We see Spirit through...
What We See (Action)
Immediate Mutual Support: Physically picking up a teammate after a mistake (e.g., running to give a high-five or pat on the back after a dropped pass in rugby, a missed layup in basketball, or hitting a badminton shuttle into the net).
Selfless Contribution: Putting team success above individual glory (e.g., tracking back 40 meters to cover a teammate's defensive slip in football, or executing a selfless decoy run to open space for someone else).
Highest Sportsmanship: Handing the ball directly back to the referee or umpire; accepting tight line calls or decisions without visual or verbal protest.
Post-Match Humility & Dignity: Immediately lining up to shake hands with the opposition and officials with high posture, regardless of the scoreboard. Congratulating the opposition on a good game.
What We Hear (Language)
Rebuilding Trust: "Unlucky, next play! I’ve got your back."
Recognising Selflessness: "Great screen!" or "Incredible chase back, thank you!"
Respect for the Game: "Good match, umpire. Thank you for your time."
We move as one unit. We embrace our diverse backgrounds, ensure every player has a pathway to belong, and build a safe community where everyone is welcome to take risks, express themselves, and grow.
Knowing your team has your back completely, allowing you to play without fear of failure and stretch your limits.
We see Together through...
What We See (Actions)
Radical Inclusion: Automatically partnering with different squad members during warm-ups and drills, actively preventing cliques from forming.
Safe Risk-Taking: Feeling secure enough to try high-skill plays under pressure (e.g., attempting a difficult offload in rugby, a cross-court flick in badminton, or a creative through-ball in football) because they know teammates will chase and clean up if it fails.
Unified Bench Culture: The entire squad (starters and substitutes alike) wearing the navy and white kit with pride, and celebrating a bench player’s court entry or contribution as intensely as a match-winning goal.
Shared Responsibility: Successes and mistakes are owned as a group.
What We Hear (Language)
Encouraging the Risk: "Love the vision, keep trying that pass!" or "Great option, we've got you covered!" after a risky play doesn't come off.
Squad-First Language: Consistently using "We," "Us," and "Our team" rather than "I" or "Me."
Welcoming Voices: "Come and join our rondo, we need one more!"
Thank you for your continued support in upholding these standards across our school community.
